KFC Packaging Summit Provides Orientation for Suppliers

Louisville, Ky. — Nov. 6, 2006  —

KFC LogoOn Oct. 5-6, representatives from Unified Foodservice Purchasing Co-op, LLC (UFPC) and 12 suppliers attended a summit at KFC Corp. headquarters to learn about the Restaurant Ready Process, Yum! Brands, Inc. and UFPC roles, and other aspects of the business.

The conference drew representatives from Huhtamaki Foodservice, Inc., Dart Container Corp., Rock-Tenn Co. and others, said Curtis Chaney, Senior Purchasing Manager on UFPC’s packaging team. Chaney co-organized the event with Ronda Schaefer, Director, Program Management, KFC National Purchasing Co-op, Inc.

Packaging is a high-profile item these days, thanks to an industry trend to use packaging to help advertise new menu items or special promotions. A generation ago, existing boxes and wrappers performed double-duty for both old and new food items.

“The different packaging is crucial for marketing,” Chaney said. “Graphic and design changes increase interest in a new product, while helping to establish brand image.”

Several UFPC team members supported the conference. Tim Mueller, Vice President, General Manager of the KFC Concept Co-op, gave the keynote address, while Chaney and Schaefer presented on the roles and responsibilities of purchasing and program management, respectively. Pete Suerken, Vice President, Centralized Purchasing and Commodity Risk Management attended, as did John Eger, Senior Director, Purchasing.

Others who lent support include Wanda Tyler, Julie Jones, Renee Fromme, Paul Martel and Mark Oeschli from the packaging team. On the KFC side, Debbie Fralick, Jennifer Martin and Kristi Allen helped facilitate the event.

Yum! Brands presenters included Richard Wright, Finance and Accounting; Glenn White and Randy Spurgeon, Engineering Services; Natalie Grider, Marketing; and Doug Hasselo, Research and Development.

UFPC is the exclusive supply chain management organization for Yum! Brands, Inc. UFPC manages the supply chain for all corporate- and most franchise-owned A&W, KFC, Long John Silver's, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell restaurant outlets in the United States. UFPC negotiates volume purchases of equipment, food, packaging and other supplies from manufacturers and suppliers for purchase by operators.
