UFPC, Suppliers and Partners Complete Pilot Test for Supply Chain Traceability

Louisville, Ky. — March 15, 2011

Unified Foodservice Purchasing Co-op, LLC (UFPC) completed the facilitation of a successful pilot program testing supplier-to-restaurant traceability on four mainstream food items. In coordination with Tyson Foods, Taylor Farms and McLane Foodservice, as well as partners from Airclic, GS1 US and USDA, the pilot program proved successful in providing end-to-end traceability on food items moving through the supply chain.

UFPC's bar coding initiative started in 2005 by the implementation of standardized barcodes on product cases supporting the Yum! Brands supply chain. From 2005 to 2009, UFPC established bar code specifications and implementation processes that were widely adopted by the food service industry. Coordinating with over 400 suppliers, UFPC now has a program resulting in 99 percent of 3,200 food and packaging items following GS1 global standards.

Since 2008, product traceability has become highly visible in regards to food safety, monitoring, and accountability at each point in the supply chain. In 2010, Congress passed the Food Safety Modernization Act which required that all players in the country's (food) supply chain plan and execute processes to track a food item upstream or downstream, at any point in time.

GS1 US is a not-for-profit organization that brings industry communities together to solve supply chain problems through the implementation of GS1 standards. More than 200,000 businesses in 25 industries rely on GS1 US for trading-partner collaboration and for maximizing business processes.
